Engage

  • In this part of the cycle, the teacher (and sometimes the coach, depending on the coaching modalities selected) try out the new instructional practice. During the engagement, student learning data is gathered for reflection purposes. It is important to remember that this part of the cycle is for experimentation and tinkering so that instructional practices can continue to grow and develop. When working through the engage portion, an NPS instructional coach should consider:

    • Depending on the coaching modalities selected, the steps will be different here.
      • If the coach is attending another colleague’s class with the selected
teacher to observe a specific instructional practice, then the coach and
teacher need to determine how they will record their thinking and
        wonderings during that observation
      • If the coach is co-teaching with the teacher, they will have to determine
which parts of the lesson the coach is instructing versus which parts the
        teacher is instructing
