Virtual Scholars Academy Updates for the 2021 - 2022 School Year

  • As we plan for next school year, NPS is considering a full virtual program similar to the current Virtual Scholars Academy (VSA). While a final plan has not been determined, we will need data from parents to determine the details of the program for next school year. For the 2021-2022 school year, the Virtual Scholars Program will be a school-sponsored program open to all NPS students grades K-12 with full course offerings to include special education services and collaborative classes.

A few things you may want to consider when determining if the VSA Program is the educational program for your student:

      • Students may or may not be taught by a teacher from their home school.
      • Students CAN participate in sports and extra-curricular activities at their zoned/home school.
      • Students cannot attend VSA if they are attending a specialty program (IB, Medical, Arts, etc.).
      • Students/Parents will be asked for a year-long commitment to the program.

The VSA will provide students with 4 synchronous days of class per week to Zoom with their teachers and 1 asynchronous day to complete class assignments. The VSA may also have an Independent Study Program (VSA-ISP), which will allow students to work asynchronously all week through Canvas with scheduled meeting times with their teachers. As always VSA and VSA-ISP students must follow all NPS policies and procedures within the traditional schools and specialty programs.

About the Virtual Scholars Academy (VSA)

  • The VSA is an option for parents/guardians to have their child(ren) attend a virtual (online) school for the 2020-2021 school year. The VSA is a semester-long commitment.

The window to opt-in/opt-out of the NPS Virtual Scholars Academy (VSA) for the second semester beginning on February 1, 2020, is from January 4 - 22, 2021. Parents/guardians interested in the VSA should contact their child(ren)'s principal via email during this timeframe to discuss participation. There is no further action required for any students that are currently enrolled in the program and wish to continue for the remainder of the school year

Parents/guardians will be able to opt-in or opt-out of VSA at the beginning of each school semester (August and January).

The most common question is: What will this experience look like?

The simplest answer is: Since the whole school division will be online for at least the first quarter of the school year, the VSA will be a continuation of the first quarter that your child will experience from September to at least November 2, 2020. We do not expect teachers to change when we move back to face-to-face/blended instruction.

The VSA is a school-within-a-school program. Your student will still be part of his or her home school or specialty program and will not lose his or her spot.

Everything else will remain the same. Students will be able to participate in sports, school activities, specialty programs, and receive gifted support. Special education support may change if we are not able to provide appropriate services in an online environment, as determined by the IEP team.

VSA students will continue with the same online curriculum and pacing for the rest of the school semester, while the rest of the division will follow a blended/ face-to-face model. At the semester change, families can decide to opt-in or opt-out of VSA.

This is a program for all K-12 NPS students.
