Sherwood Forest Mission-Statement


    Instructional Focus 

    The staff at Sherwood Forest Elementary School will collaborate to ensure all students leave the school with the ability to think critically and solve problems in all content areas.  To accomplish this goal, SFES staff will incorporate research based critical thinking strategies into all areas of instruction.  Students' success will be measured by DBA, STAR,  and DRA assessments.

    Norfolk Public Schools is dedicated to providing opportunities for students to continue learning during this period of school closures. The Department of Curriculum & Instruction has created Learning in Place plans for all subjects in every grade level to ensure students are provided with learning experiences while they are away from school.     Learning packets with multiple lessons and activities for every subject will be available on the Norfolk Public Schools website beginning Tuesday, March 17th. The learning packets can be found at this link:

    Paper copies of the Learning in Place plans can also be obtained where Grab-n-Go meals will be served from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. beginning Tuesday, March 17th, through Friday, March 27th (weekdays only).     Please remind your child(ren) how important it is to complete their Learning in Place plans before they return to school. We deeply appreciate your patience and support during this challenging time!

    Updated Guidelines for Specialty Programs, Spring 2020

    Due to the extended school closure mandated by Govenor Northam, the Specialty Program Committee has reviewed the application process and the following adjustments have been made: 

    • There will be no program testing; 
    • There will be no interviews; and 
    • There will be no portfolio reviews or auditions 

    Each student's application will be evaluated by using the established district rubric which includes reviewing the application information and the student's record.

    For the lottery schools: The lotteries for Academy for Discovery, Southside Stem, Ghent, and Academy of International Studies will be conducted the week of April 6, 2020.

    For all programs: Studnets will be notified of their status for the 2020-21 in a mailing scheduled to be sent out April 27, 2020.
