Norfolk Public Schools’ Child-Care Plan for Fall 2021

Norfolk Public Schools is collaborating with child-care providers throughout the city to ensure parents/guardians have access to affordable child care during the virtual start to the 2020-2021 school year. These low-cost programs will be hosted in various school buildings throughout the city for essential workers and other parents/guardians who work during the day. Providers and site locations will be continually updated. Here is a list of Extended Face to Face Child Care Program 2020-2021.

Total of 96 slots available and distributed among these sites:- Camp Allen Elementary (4-year-olds through 5th grade)
- Coleman Place Elementary (3-year-olds through 5th grade)
- Little Creek Elementary (4-year-olds through 5th grade)
- Richard Bowling Elementary (3-year-olds through 5th grade)
Hours: Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Registration fee: $75*
Full-day program: $35/day*
*10% discount for military, multi-child, school district employee, and students eligible for free/reduced priced meals

How much does the child-care program cost per day/per week? Are there discounts?
The cost will vary and there are discounts available if parents/guardians qualify for them. Please contact the child-care agency for specific pricing details.

Is transportation provided?
No, transportation will not be provided. Parents/guardians will have to transport their child to the child-care program.

Will food be served?
Norfolk Public Schools will offer grab-n-go meals to students each instructional day under the National School Breakfast, National School Lunch, and Child and Adult Care Food Program. Breakfast, snack, and supper are provided free of charge to all students. Lunch is free of charge for students who are eligible to receive free/reduced priced lunch, based on their eligibility status at the school in which they are enrolled. Full price lunch is $1.85 for elementary students and $1.95 for middle and high school students. Payments can be made online at https://www2.mypaymentsplus.com/welcome or in person at the Office of School Nutrition.

What’s going to happen during the day? (playtime, schoolwork, etc.)
The child-care agencies have agreed to align their programs with NPS virtual learning schedules. They will support grade-level-specific virtual learning to include daily interactions between teachers and students, asynchronous activities, art and music sessions, and small group and independent learning opportunities.

Will the child-care staff help my child with classwork?
Yes. NPS will provide professional development to the agencies’ on-site staff to ensure that they can assist students with logging on and accessing their classes and assignments.

What supplies will my kids need to bring to the site? Will there be Wi-Fi and devices at the child-care site?
Students’ personal or NPS-issued mobile devices should be brought to the child-care program and used to ensure their daily learning and engagement. NPS students will be able to access the school's wireless internet with their devices while they are in NPS buildings. Please contact the child-care agency for more information regarding other supplies.

Can parents/guardians come into the building to drop off the kids or is it a pull up and drop off?
Please contact the child-care agency for their specific drop-off and pick-up procedures.

If a parent/guardian signs up their child(ren), do they have to commit to the full five days or can they use the service as needed?
This is a flexible child-care program and can be adjusted to fit parents’/guardians’ needs.

In addition to providing the physical locations, what else will NPS be involved with in this partnership?
NPS is providing the building use, meals, and custodians for building access and regular cleaning of spaces.
