No formal letter or numerical grade will be given to students during Q4. Instead, a “Pass” (P) or “Incomplete” (I) will be issued to all students, including kindergarten students.
A “Pass” is based on at least one of the following instructional engagements: completion and submission of Learning in Place plan activities; weekly online communication through Zoom meetings, Class Dojo, or Google classroom; e-mail communication with classroom teachers; or through telephone conferences with classroom teachers to determine students’ level of understanding of essential skills.
If teachers determine that students did not sufficiently demonstrate competency of essential skills through the above-listed engagements, they can issue an “Incomplete” to students for Q4.
Yes. Students who receive an “Incomplete” can earn a “Pass” through one of these options: complete a portfolio; complete a teacher-directed project; complete a Learning in Place content packet(s) that was not submitted previously; or attend a summer school program (if offered by Norfolk Public Schools). Completion of one of these options must take place by no later than August 28, 2020.
Students’ overall final grade will be calculated based on the previous three quarters and a “Pass” (P) or “Incomplete” assessment for the fourth quarter. Students must have an overall passing average for the first three quarters and receive a “Pass” for Q4 to be promoted to the next grade level or to pass the course for the academic year.
In the case of kindergarten students: Final grades for kindergarten students will be calculated for the first three quarters based on these assessments of overall student performance: Mastery (M); Making Progress (P); Needs Improvement (N); or Not Yet Introduced (/). While kindergarten students will not receive a formal grade for Q4, they must receive a “Pass” (P) during the final quarter to be promoted to first grade.
Yes. Students may submit missing work for all previous quarters until June 12, 2020. Teachers will review all make-up work and enter it into students’ grades only if these grades positively impact students’ overall average.
Yes. Students’ and families’ unique circumstances will be reviewed on an individual basis as NPS is committed to not penalizing students for an inability to fully engage in the learning process. Students will be provided every opportunity to demonstrate some level of understanding of essential skills and engagement with the Learning in Place plans.
Questions and/or concerns about a student’s grades or progress during Q4 should be directed to your child’s classroom teacher or principal.
