    Dear Parents and Guardians,

Norfolk Public Schools’ top priority is the health and safety of our students and staff. Beginning this fall, NPS will be testing the drinking water at every school and facility to ensure we are meeting the Environmental Protection Agency’s lead safety standards.

The initiative, which began on November 23, 2019, and will go through June 2020, will test the oldest buildings first and will collect nearly 8,000 samples from all potable water sources in 55 schools and facilities. Testing will take place after hours and on the weekends so there will be no disruption to the instructional day.

The school division has contracted with an independent laboratory to conduct the testing. Results will be shared with each school and facility as well as the plan for resolving any issue. As always, we thank you for your continued support of our students and staff.

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Sharon I. Byrdsong
    Acting Superintendent of Schools
