Cancellation, Closings, Dismissals, & Delays
Beginning on May 11, five more meal distribution sites will be added to the current 12 sites and three locations for school bus deliveries (for a list of these sites, please scroll below to the March 17 and March 18 postings). The new sites are: Crossroads School, Little Creek Primary, Ocean View Elementary, Tanners Creek Elementary, and Tidewater Park Elementary.
Also starting on May 11, the meal distribution schedule will change to Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and will maintain the current times of 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Every Friday, the meal distribution will include two additional days of food, at no charge, per child for Saturdays and Sundays.
On March 30, Governor Ralph Northam issued a temporary Stay at Home Executive Order to slow the spread of the coronavirus through June 10. During this time, meals will continue to be distributed to students at all 15 sites. Starting on April 6, updated Learning in Place packets will continue to be distributed at the 12 school food sites. Parents/guardians also have the option of picking up their child's learning packet at their school, however, they must make an appointment in advance by emailing the principal. This ensures that NPS meets the guideline of having only 10 people in a school at any one time.
In alignment with Governor Ralph Northam’s executive order issued on March 23, 2020, all Norfolk Public Schools will be closed through the end of the school year. The Governor indicated that this decision was made to protect the health of all Virginians and minimize the spread of the current Coronavirus disease.
Beginning on Thursday, March 19, three more sites will provide grab-n-go meals to better serve Norfolk families. A school bus will deliver meals to the three new sites on the following schedule on weekdays through Friday, March 27: Titustown Recreation Center (7545 Diven St., 23505) at 11 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.; Huntersville Community Center (830 Goff St., 23504) at 12 noon – 12:30 p.m.; Grandy Village Recreation Center (3017 Kimball Terrace, 23504) at 1 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Effective Wednesday, March 18, all school buildings and offices will be closed through Friday, March 27. During this period, school food service sites will be open as planned from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Booker T. Washington HS, P.B. Young ES, Azalea Gardens MS, James Monroe ES, Suburban Park ES, Lake Taylor School, Coleman Place ES, Camp Allen ES, Oceanair ES, St. Helena ES, Norview ES, and Southside STEM Academy.
These employee groups are required to report to work on both Monday, March 16, and Tuesday, March 17: all central office employees, all 12-month employees, principals, assistant principals, 12-month clerical/office staff, ITRTs, core content area teacher specialists, school nurses, school nutrition staff, building custodians and facilities staff. All other staff, including teachers, do not need to report. However, teachers may choose to report to their schools to retrieve planning materials, as needed. Further direction will be given on March 17 regarding the remainder of the work week.
· Norfolk Public Schools will be closed for students from Monday, March 16, 2020, through Friday, March 27, 2020.
· School Board meeting canceled for March 18, 2020.
· School is closed for NPS students on Monday, March 16, 2020. It will be a staff planning day for teachers.
· Effective immediately: all Norfolk Public Schools' field trips and extracurricular activities are canceled until further notice.
