“I am excited that your child has elected to be a member of the Azalea Gardens Middle School Band. Membership in the school Band opens up a whole new world of fun and friendship. Band provides a great foundation for your child in all aspects of life. In addition to music, students learn self-discipline, group cooperation, problem solving, goal setting, self-expression, memory skills, concentration, poise, enhanced physical coordination, high self-esteem, and the importance of teamwork – skills in great demand in almost every aspect of life. Music has a profound effect on the academic success of students as well.”
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Our time in band will be largely focused on building upon the good habits of basic musicianship they learned last year. These include maintaining or correcting posture, increased music literacy, fundamentals of feeling and counting rhythms, rhythmic dictation and short compositions, review how to hold/produce sound/clean and maintain each instrument, practice etiquette in a band rehearsal/performance, and be responsible for maintaining a clean community space in the band room. Students will be working on audition techniques to include scale memorization, practice strategies, goal setting for home practice sessions, audition process and mock auditions, technical vs lyrical performance, and analysis/preparation/memorization/performance of the chromatic scale.
We offer Beginning Band to 6th Graders, Intermediate Band to 7th Graders, and Advanced Band to 8th Graders. We also offer a Percussion Ensemble that is opened up to those students who would like to learn how to play percussion instruments, such as the snare drum and mallet percussion.

About the Band
-
Azalea Gardens Middle School band is rooted in a rich band history dating back to the opening of the school. The high standards established then are maintained now and students are consistently pushed to do their best.
At Azalea Gardens Middle School, band is an elective course, which meets for 90 minutes every other day. The bands are divided by grade levels and offer: 6th grade Beginning band, 7th grade Intermediate Band, and the 8th grade Advanced Band. After completion of 6th grade band students are eligible to audition for the 7th grade percussion ensemble.
Students begin their band experience in 6th grade band where they start to learn their instrument. As they continue on in 7th and 8th grade they grow in ability and opportunity. The band students will have several performance opportunities throughout the year; including: playing for community events, band festivals, and honor ensembles.
