    • Vaccination Clinics at School

Posted by James Kirk on 6/4/2021

      Dear AGMS Parents and Guardians:

On Monday, June 7 and Friday, June 11 from 8:30 to 11:00, the Norfolk Department of Health will conduct COVID-19 vaccination clinics for students, staff, and parents, ages 12 and up at Azalea Gardens Middle School. The Pfizer vaccine has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in individuals aged 12 and up with parental permission. For a copy of the parent permission and health screening forms along with additional information, please visit the NPS website and click on thevaccination clinics iconon the left under District Announcements.

Parents and guardians requesting the vaccination will need Pfizer EUA Fact Sheet, sign the COVID-19 Consent Form and receive the v-safe information. These forms were sent home with students this week or you may visit the NPS website to download them.

Parents/guardians can now enroll adolescents (ages 12 and older) in the v-safe after vaccination health checker℠ and complete health check-ins on their behalf after COVID-19 vaccination. Parents and guardians should use their smartphone to complete a separate v-safe registration for each adolescent. All v-safe communications will be sent to the parent or guardian’s smartphone.

Those receiving first doses over the next few weeks will be able to get their second dose at clinics set up in school buildings during the summer sessions. For further questions not covered here, or in the FAQs down below, please contact your respective school, or the Department of Student Wellness at (757) 628-3928.

      Thank you.

    • SOL Testing Including VSA Students

Posted by James Kirk on 5/10/2021

Good afternoon, AGMS Parents, Students, and Families, this is your principal, Dr. Kirk, calling with some important information for the week of May 10th, 2021.

Fully Charged Chromebooks. Attention Virtual Scholars and all students, it is very, very important to bring your fully charged Chromebook with you to school on the day of your SOL test. This Wednesday, May 12, is the reading SOL. Spare chargers and Chromebooks are limited.

Transportation for Virtual Scholars on Wednesdays. Busses will be provided. Bus stop information is being sent to students securely via Canvas or you may call the school. There will be two afternoon busses. One at 12:30 p.m. and one at 3:00 p.m. Bus riders, walkers, and parent pickups who are finished with the test will be released at those times. All students must dismiss at 3:00.

Virtual Scholar Academy parents and guardians who wish to pick their children up when they are finished may do so. We do ask that you check your student out per standard procedure, showing identification and signing out with the main office. We will have your child up front and ready.

Water. Students are invited to bring a water bottle. Water only please.

Dress Code. The NPS dress code is in full effect. See the student handbook for more details. We especially want our students to be safe in the proper footwear, no slides or Crocs please.

Asynchronous Work.  On Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, if your student is not taking an SOL test, they will have asynchronous work. On Tuesdays and Fridays, students will either report or Zoom to class per normal.

Virtual Scholars SOL Opt Out. We have made arrangements for all students to participate in SOL testing. SOL tests must be given in person. There is no virtual option for the SOL test. There is an alternative test, not the SOL, that Virtual Scholars may take from home if parents so choose. Please email our administrator over testing, Mrs. Frank, lfrank@nps.k12.va.us, for details and to request opting out of the SOL. Your school counselor can help you with the ramifications of opting out of a verified credit SOL in middle school.

Summer School Opportunities. Students who fail one or more of their core content classes and do not make up the grade by the end of the year will be required to attend summer school. Registration is past due so please don’t delay. Students who finish the year in good academic standing are also invited to attend our Azalea Gardens Middle School Summer Leadership Academy. The Leadership Academy is designed to explore thematic summer learning across math, science, history, STEM, and the arts. Be sure not to use the bus lane during arrival and dismissal as you will receive a traffic ticket from the Norfolk Police Department – also, please be respectful of your handicap parking spaces. Thank you.

Chromebooks and Cases. Students, please be sure to bring your fully charged Chromebook with you to school when it is your day to return. Posted by James Kirk on 1/31/2021

      January 31, 2021

Azalea Gardens Middle School Instructional Focus

The instructional focus of Azalea Gardens Middle School is for all students to show measurable growth in reading, writing, and learning for excellence through the implementation of a school wide focus on reading and writing across the content areas as measured by SOL scores, a common writing rubric, and STAR reading.

Good afternoon AGMS Parents, Students, and Families, this is your principal, Dr. Kirk, calling with some important information about second semester schedules, HS football conditioning, teacher substitutes, report cards and more, for the week of February 1, 2021.

Second Semester begins Monday, February 1stTomorrow morning, our second semester and third quarter for the 2020-2021 school year will begin. Eighth grade students’ schedules will remain the same; however, sixth and seventh grade students’ exploratory elective will change, unless they are a music student. Music students will stay in band, chorus, or orchestra. Sixth and seventh grade students who had Ms. Kinney, Ms. Stokes, Mr. Payne, or Ms. Drum for the first semester will switch to their new elective. You can see StudentVue, ParentVue, or Canvas for more information. Health and PE will stay the same.

HS Football Conditioning: Attention 8th graders, High School JV Football spring conditioning begins tomorrow, Feb 1st. You must have a valid physical, concussion protocol, and COVID-19 protocol complete in order to participate. You must also participate with the high school for which you are currently zoned. Best of luck to all of our football athletes. Play hard and play safe!

Teacher Substitute Plans: AGMS procedures include sudden asynchronous work for students in the event of an unforeseen teacher absence. We do make every effort to secure a substitute teacher, but at times it may be necessary for teachers to provide asynchronous learning for students in the event of an unplanned absence. When this procedure occurs, teachers will let students know what to do through Canvas and Google Classroom. If you have any questions, you can email the teacher directly. See our website for more information.

DBA’s Continue This Week: Our District Benchmark Assessments for the second quarter continue this week. Parents, be sure to ask your children and your children’s teachers about their progress on these very important tests.

Report Cards Mailed Feb 10: Students and parents are always encouraged to check StudentVue and ParentVue for current grades. Remember, only those platforms are for your official, actual grade. No other platform, not Google Classroom or any other, will have your actual grade. Check ParentVue. In addition, traditional report cards will be mailed from the schools on or about February 10th. Parents, be on the lookout for this important US post.

Parent-Teacher Conferences: Parent-teacher conferences continue each Wednesday. If you would like to schedule a parent-teacher conference, held via Zoom, please visit our School Counselor’s page on the AGMS website for the sign up form. A Zoom link will be sent to you.

One exciting part of the Leadership Academy is the Fly Norfolk program studying aviation and avionics in partnership with Aviation Institute of Maintence on Little Creek Boulevard. See our website for details.

Please proceed down Heutte Drive and turn into the parking lot, taking an immediate right and proceed counter clockwise through the parking lot. Please be patient, drive slowly, be mindful of pedestrian traffic.

If you still need a Chromebook, one will be issued to you. Please ask your parents to sign the Chromebook form. Beginning tomorrow, will also issue you a Chromebook case to protect the computer.

Water. Students are invited to bring a water bottle. Water only please.

Dress Code. The NPS dress code is in full effect. See the student handbook for more details. We especially want our students to be safe in the proper footwear, no slides or Crocs please.
