At Lake Taylor High School, the administration, faculty, staff, and students have embraced an instructional focus that emphasizes active reading and critical thinking across content areas. To help students improve in these areas, teachers explicitly model how to use specific strategies and provide opportunities for students to practice them as well. For example, when confronted with a text (fiction or nonfiction passage, primary document, artwork, music, map, mathematical equation, etc.), students are encouraged to employ one of the “Magnificent Seven” reading strategies to help them better understand its content and more fully appreciate its purpose and effect. Often, we use graphic organizers to help develop, organize, and analyze the ideas generated during these critical thinking moments. Finally, our “Word Attack” strategy helps students determine the meaning of less familiar vocabulary words that are often found in more rigorous texts.
