Dans un premier temps, à l’initiative du poste diplomatique français de Washington, du conseiller des Français à l’étranger, du Consul Honoraire de Norfolk et de l’Attaché Culturel Educatif, une délégation de la mission laïque française (MLF) a été reçue par le commandement militaire américain dans la perspective de la scolarisation d’enfants de militaires français expatriés.

Sollicitée de nouveau par l’Etat-Major des Armées (EMA), pilote du projet, en février 2010, la MLF a dépêché à Norfolk son représentant en Amérique du Nord pour étoffer le projet en collaboration avec l’élément de soutien national (ESN) de Norfolk. L’objectif était de pallier l’absence de structure scolaire française sur la zone alors que le nombre d’enfants à scolariser était en constante augmentation. L’ESN de Norfolk a ainsi élaboré un projet de création d’une école franco-américaine avec l’accord et le soutien du maire de Norfolk, particulièrement actif sur ce dossier.

Le Conseil d’Administration de Norfolk Public Schools (NPS – Ecoles Publiques de Norfolk) a travaillé en étroite collaboration avec l’ESN de Norfolk et la MLF à l’élaboration d’un partenariat pédagogique franco-américain. Les directeurs des établissements concernés, école élémentaire de Crossroads, le collège de Norview et lycée de Granby, étaient parties prenantes au projet. Les étudiants sont maintenant regroupés à l’école élémentaire et au collège de Crossroads ainsi qu’au lycée de Granby.

Fruit d’un partenariat entre la MLF, l’EMA et NPS, l’école franco-américaine de Norfolk accueillait ses premiers élèves à la rentrée de septembre 2011.

On the initiative of the French Abroad Advisor of the French Embassy in Washington, the Honorary Consul of Norfolk, and the French Cultural Attaché, a delegation of the Mission Laïque Française (MLF) was received by the US Military authorities in preparation for the schooling of French military children.

In February 2010, on a new request of the French Joint Staff (FJS), the MLF sent its representatives to Norfolk in order to set up the project in cooperation with the French National Support Element (ESN) in Norfolk. The aim was to overcome the lack of French academic structure in Norfolk as the number of children to be schooled was constantly increasing. The French ESN of Norfolk has developed a project to create a French-American school with the agreement and support of Norfolk’ mayor who was particularly active on this issue.

The Norfolk Public Schools (NPS) School Board worked closely with the French ESN and the MLF in the development of a Franco-American pedagogical partnership. The Principals of the concerned institutions, Crossroads School and Northside Middle School as well as Granby High School, were also involved in the project. Now all students attend elementary and middle school at Crossroads and Middle school and Granby High School.

As the result of a tripartite partnership between the MLF, FSJ and NPS, the French-American School of Norfolk welcomed its first students in the fall of September 2011.
