Dear Apprentice and Sponsor:
Welcome back to the start of the 2014-2015 school year at Norfolk Technical Center with our (ARI) Apprenticeship Related Instruction program. The 2013-2014 school years was an extremely good year with many of our apprentices completing related instruction in their respective fields. We are excited about this upcoming school year and look forward to providing you with the very best apprenticeship related instruction. Because the VCCS contracts are not released until the beginning of the School Year, and this brochure must be printed way in advance of that, our prices are set, based on last year’s information. Our publishers have all announced that we will have some price increases for the majority of their books. We have worked as closely as we could with our publishers to keep the cost down for our sponsors and apprentices. Unfortunately with the economic recession and continuous budgeting constraints throughout our Region and the state we were not able to obtain a well deserved pay raise for our instructors.
As always, there is always room for another good instructor. If you or someone you know is interested in serving or giving back to the trade, please call the Apprenticeship Related Instruction Office.
Credit-By-Exam Challenge Tests (optional) have been scheduled for August. If you have formal training related to your trade, you may want to try passing the Credit-By-Exam instead of taking the class. See page 2 for complete details. Feel free to post the Credit-By-Exam page on your company bulletin board. Re-member, as a sponsor, you may grant credit for “work Experience” this is not Apprenticeship Related Instruction (ARI). Do not place apprentices in advanced classes unless they have completed previous years of ARI at N.T.C. or have satisfactorily completed Credit-By-Exam Challenge Test.
Enclosed is the information needed to enroll apprentices in related instruction classes. If you have questions, please call the Apprenticeship Related Instruction Office at 757-892-3300.
Most classes meet twice a week on either a Monday/Wednesday or a Tuesday/Thursday schedule. Please see the class schedule for actual nights and room locations. In case of inclement weather or other school cancellations, the first night missed will not be made up. If two or more classes are canceled, they may be rescheduled.
Enrollment for Apprenticeship Related Instruction MUST be received by August 29, 2014, to avoid late fees.
The Apprenticeship Related Instruction Office, The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry, The Virginia Community College System – State Apprenticeship Related Instruction Office, the instructors, and the advisory committee are looking forward to a great year for apprenticeship. Please join us in making this our best school year yet.
