NPS Military Heroes

April 6, 2017

Dear NPS Staff:

The Virginia Board of Education and Governor Terry McAuliffe have respectively issued a resolution and a certificate of proclamation recognizing April 2017 as the Month of the Military Child. Norfolk Public Schools is committed to celebrating our military-connected and veteran-connected students and families during this time! The school division is honored to serve and to celebrate the children of those who make tremendous sacrifices to serve our great country!

Our military-connected and veteran-connected students demonstrate great resilience and perseverance as they face the challenges of frequent transitions, family separations due to deployments, and mobility. They offer a valuable and unique perspective from which our school-community can learn and grow.

In recognition of the Month of the Military Child, NPS staff and students are strongly encouraged to submit photographs of their personal “military heroes” for display on the school division’s website. Staff and students should submit pictures of family members who are currently on active duty, retired, or part of the national guard/reserve forces. Photographs must be submitted electronically as an attachment to “NPS Military Heroes;” this link may be found on the home page of the school division’s website. The name of the military hero and the student’s or staff member’s name should be included, if desired.

In addition, on Friday, April 21, 2017, NPS will “PurpleUp! For Military Kids” by wearing purple on this date to demonstrate support for the service and sacrifice of our military-connected and veteran-connected students. The color purple represents the blending of the colors of the five branches of our armed forces: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy. Please participate in this magnificent celebration!
