Oceanair Elementary 5th graders rank number five in national WordMasters Challenge

Oceanair Elementary  5th graders rank number five in national WordMasters Challenge™

A team representing Oceanair Elementary School achieved Highest Honors in the recent WordMasters Challenge™—a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students. The fifth grade team scored an impressive 186 points out of a possible 200 in the second of three meets this year, placing fifth in the nation in this annual competition.

Competing in the Blue Division of the WordMasters Challenge™, fifth graders Hareem Mubashar, Mia Skiffy, Samarah Taylor and Harleem Wright, each earned a perfect score of 20 on the challenge. Only 34 fifth graders in the nation achieved this result. Angelina Jordon was also listed among other students from Oceanair who achieved outstanding results in the meet. The coach for this team is Gifted Education Teacher, Barbara Harrison.

The WordMasters Challenge™ is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges  them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships.
