NPS and ODU Celebrate Education Day 2019 with a Win

Thousands of Norfolk Public Schools’ students celebrated Education Day on Wednesday with the Old Dominion University women’s basketball team.

Crossroads Elementary School sang the National Anthem and Acting Superintendent Dr. Sharon I. Byrdsong received the game ball during the pregame ceremony.

“This event is a highlight of the school year for so many children,” said Dr. Byrdsong. “We are appreciative of the university’s hospitality and enthusiasm for celebrating public education with us. It is also wonderful for students to get a glimpse of an active college campus and what it has to offer. Additionally, we are humbled by the donations received from our community partners to make it possible for our students to participate!”

Dr. Byrdsong was joined by NPS Senior Coordinator of Athletics Stephen Suttmiller for the Ninth Annual Education Day Game.

He said, “The collaborative effort between ODU, NPS, and area businesses is truly a unique experience. Seeing the children arrive with excitement in their eyes and voices each year makes all the effort put into this event worthwhile!”

Granby Elementary School Cheerleaders performed a routine for the crowd during halftime.

Following the game, Head Coach Nikki McCray took to social media tweeting that NPS’s energy was contagious and helped the team get the win.

The Lady Monarchs beat the Winthrop Lady Eagles 68-44.
