Southside STEM Academy was a part of a major tree-planting initiative on Friday, October 18.
The event was coordinated by Friends of Norfolk’s Environment (FONE) and funded by Bank of America and Arbor Day Foundation.
Southside STEM Academy is one of five locations to establish a new Living Legacy Grove.
The groves are an essential component to Norfolk’s resilience strategy, which is aimed at increasing the tree canopy to reduce the impacts of storm water, tidal surge, and provide clean air and water.
Volunteers will plant more than 200 native trees, and hundreds of shrubs, grasses, and perennials across all five of the groves.
The remaining tree-planting events are below, and include another NPS school: - October 26: Little Creek Elementary, 7901 Nancy Drive - November 2: Poplar Hall Park, 101 N. Military Highway - November 9: Sarah Constant Beach Park, 300 W. Ocean View Avenue
