NPS School Board Meeting Recognition Wrap Up

There were many special moments during Wednesday night’s School Board meeting.

Faith Handley and Charity Warren, NPS’ Student School Board Representative and alternate respectively for the 2019-2020 school year, were sworn into office. Handley is a Maury High School Senior. Warren is a senior at Lake Taylor High School and will serve as the alternate.

The following new administrators were recognized and each received an NPS portfolio as a welcoming gesture:
• Laundrell Gates, Principal of Willoughby Elementary
• Two Assistant Principals for Southside STEM Academy at Campostella: Jerrilyn Dickey and Tanisha Urquhart
• Jennifer McMullen-Muller, Assistant Principal at Ghent School
• Madeline Curott, Marketing and Media Relations Coordinator in Communications and Media Relations
• Lisa Winter, Acting Senior Director of School Nutrition

Granby High School’s Kim Baylor was recognized for the more than 35 years of support she has given to the City of Norfolk’s Sister City Kityakishu, Japan. School Board Chair Dr. Gabriel presented Baylor with an original piece of Japanese artwork created by NPS’ Senior Coordinator of Art Georgeanna Fellio. Baylor is a Physical Education teacher at GHS.

The Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, through the leadership of Nicolle Vasquez Del Favero, Community Vice President, Ashley Chamberlain, Community Events Chair, and Sara Langford, Community Events Chair-Elect, coordinated the support and painting of beautiful murals, colorful breezeways, and a special school makeover at Little Creek Elementary School. It is part of their “Elevate to Educate” program. Jacox Elementary was selected as their 2019 School of the Year.

Safe Schools Specialist Dehon Mack was recognized for her efforts in launching NPS’ SAFE campaign: “Suicide Awareness For Everyone.” Mack was featured in a WAVY-TV 10 news story during Suicide Awareness Week, September 9-13, 2019. Mack was also presented with a proclamation from the School Board in recognition of National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, which is September. Mack received a School Board proclamation in recognition of October as National Bullying Prevention Month, too.

Lastly, Norfolk Council of PTAs were given NPS pins in recognition of their service.
