Norfolk–The School Board of the City of Norfolk held its annual retreat on Wednesday at the Brock Environmental Center in Virginia Beach, VA. Mr. Yancey Powell, Environmental Education Program Manager with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, greeted School Board members and the administration’s leadership team.
After welcoming remarks from Dr. Gabriel, School Board Chair and Dr. Sharon Byrdsong, Acting Superintendent, the day began with a session on implicit bias led by Dr. Mekbib Gemeda, VP of Diversity & Inclusion at EVMS. There was robust discussion about a number of policies such as Dress Code, Bullying Prevention and Homework, which were open for public comment. Other presentations included a review of the Board’s Accountability Plan and SOL performance data and strategies for growth and improvement. Additionally, the Board received updates on recruitment efforts of the Department of Human Resources as it continues the work of recruiting and retaining highly qualified educators and staff. Another key point of the day’s discussion centered on facilities conditions, specifically with respect to Booker T. Washington and Maury high schools as well as the division’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).
The positions of Chair and Vice Chair of the School Board were voted on and both Dr. Noelle Gabriel and Mr. Carlos Clanton remain in their current roles respectively. The day ended with a closed session to address personnel matters. The next meeting of the Board will be held on July 17, 2019.
