Norfolk School Board Names Interim Superintendent

Dr. Byrdsong

NORFOLK, VA — The School Board of the City of Norfolk appointed NPS Administrator Dr. Sharon I. Byrdsong as Interim Superintendent of Schools effective immediately. The Board voted to appoint Byrdsong during its June 19 School Board meeting. She will serve in this role as the Board begins the process of searching for a new superintendent.

Byrdsong currently leads the Department of Interagency Collaboration and Wraparound Services and has held several positions within NPS to include:  assistant principal, principal, senior director of alternative options, executive director of secondary schools, executive director of human resources, assistant superintendent of human resources, and chief of staff.  Byrdsong’s career began in the classroom as a high school teacher in the Wake County Public School System.

Byrdsong is a highly experienced, award-winning, and nationally recognized professional educator.  In 2005, Byrdsong was named the Outstanding Middle School Principal of Virginia by the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals, and in 2006, she was the recipient of the National Middle School Principal of the Year Award by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.  These awards attest to Byrdsong’s success in improving student academic achievement, focusing on closing achievement gaps, improving the overall learning environment, resolving complex problems involving the local school community, and ensuring high expectations for all students.

Byrdsong holds a Division Superintendent License and a Postgraduate Professional License from the Virginia Board of Education and a Doctor of Education degree from Regent University, where she was named the Outstanding Aluma of the First Decade of the 2000’s Award.

“The Board has full confidence in its decision to select Dr. Byrdsong to continue the strong academic focus of the school division; she has the needed leadership abilities to move the school district forward during our national superintendent search,” stated Dr. Noelle Gabriel, School Board Chair.

The School Board will begin the superintendent search process at the conclusion of today’s business meeting. Virginia law requires school districts to select a new superintendent within 180 days after the departure of a current superintendent.
