NPS Students Honored at General Douglas MacArthur Foundation Board of Directors Dinner

History took centerstage as six students from Norfolk Public Schools earned top honors in the 2026 MacArthur Memorial Essay Contest. High school and middle school students were recognized during the General Douglas MacArthur Foundation Board of Directors Dinner on June 25 at the Town Point Club.

The contest was made possible through a collaboration between the Norfolk Public Schools History Office, the General Douglas MacArthur Foundation, and the MacArthur Memorial & Museum. The contest gave middle and high school students the opportunity to showcase their ability in connecting research to history and critical thinking.

This year's essay prompt challenged students to examine The Occupation of Japan: Success or Failure? Students explored the Allied occupation of Japan following World War II by analyzing the factors that contributed to its successes while also evaluating where the occupation fell short. Using historical evidence and source analysis, students developed arguments that demonstrated their understanding of one of history's most significant postwar events.

The top three students in both the middle school and high school divisions were recognized during the General Douglas MacArthur Foundation Board of Directors. Each student received a certificate recognizing their achievement and the first place winners for high school and middle school categories each received a $500 cash prize.

"The MacArthur Memorial Essay Contest gave our students an incredible opportunity to dive deeper into history while strengthening the skills that matter across every subject: research, historical thinking, analysis, and writing," said Dr. Jennifer M. Lopez, Senior Coordinator of History & Social Science. "We are incredibly proud of our six Norfolk Public Schools winners. Experiences like this inspire students to think critically about the past, connect with our local history, and see themselves as historians, researchers, and storytellers."

The partnership reflects Norfolk Public Schools' commitment to providing students with authentic learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom while connecting them with the community and local institutions.

"I hope to [continue to] collaborate with our community partners at the General Douglas MacArthur Foundation and the MacArthur Memorial to further expand this opportunity for students in Norfolk Public Schools," Lopez said. "We are working with both stakeholders to determine next year's contest topic, prompt, and deadline to ensure they align with Virginia Standards of Learning and our local curriculum."
