Norfolk Public Schools to Close for 2026 Virginia Special Election

Norfolk Public Schools will be closed for students (not a virtual day) on April 21, 2026, out of an abundance for safety with the high possibility for increased public presence for the 2026 Virginia Special Election. Also, the day will serve as a virtual workday for all NPS staff. This has been decided based on the recommendation from Superintendent Dr. Jeff Rose. 

A majority of NPS school buildings will serve as polling locations, thus bringing increased public access to our buildings throughout the day. To ensure not only physical safety, but also the emotional environment for students and staff, schools will be closed.

Additionally, April 21, will provide staff with a dedicated virtual workday, at the department manager’s discretion, to support planning, preparation, and student support at a critical point in the academic calendar.
