Eagle Scout Project Revitalizes Entrance at The Academy at Rosemont

A local Scout has completed and presented an Eagle Scout service project, transforming the front entrance of The Academy at Rosemont (Rosemont).

Zachery Wilkerson, a member of Norfolk's Troop 1 and a former student in the Young Scholars program at Rosemont, planned and led the beautification initiative focused on restoring the school's entryway flower beds. Pictured are Zachery, a junior at Maury who is also involved with football, wrestling, and forensics; LT Erick Ignacio, who earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1993 and is the Military Science Instructor at Rosemont; and Zachery's father, Shawn Wilkerson, the Scoutmaster for Troop 1. Chartered in September 1911, Troop 1 is the oldest continuously chartered Scouting America Troop in the Commonwealth of Virginia and among the oldest active troops nationally.

The project included 72 bags of topsoil, 28 bags of landscaping mulch, and over two dozen plants to reinvigorate the school entrance. The plants were provided through Paramount Greenhouse Nursery and donations by local friends and neighbors from the Norfolk community.

This effort was made possible through volunteer assistance from First Baptist Church South Hill's Troop 934 (Chesapeake, VA), scouts from Troop 1, and students from both Maury and Granby High Schools representing the National Honor Society and the International Baccalaureate Program. Generous financial and material support was provided by Home Depot of Norfolk, Paramount Greenhouse and Nursery, First Baptist Church of South Hill, and the Rosemont PTSA. The project will be maintained by students in the Rosemont Gardening Club.
