Norfolk, VA –The safety of all Norfolk Public School students, staff, and guests remains the division’s highest priority.
Effective October 1, 2026, Norfolk Public Schools Athletics will implement a clear bag requirement for all spectators attending all athletic events. Clear bags up to 16" x 16" x 8" and small clutches up to 5" x 7" x 3/4" will be permitted. Diaper bags and American with Disabilities Act (ADA) or medically necessary items are exempt from the clear bag requirement.
Additionally, all bags and personal items are subject to search at all Norfolk Public Schools sports-related events.
“Safety remains our highest priority,” said Stephen Suttmiller, Senior Coordinator of Athletics at Norfolk Public Schools. “This requirement builds upon the division’s existing safety measures and aligns with established practices at collegiate and professional athletic venues.”
Beginning Oct. 1, the following bags will no longer be allowed at Norfolk Public Schools sporting events:
- Backpacks (Solid or Clear)
- Cooler Bags (hard or soft-sided unless medical)
- Duffel Bags
- Laptop/Camera Bags
- Luggage of any kind
- Non-clear Drawstring Bags
- Non-clear Tote Bags
- Purses
Prohibited items cannot be held in the stadium. Please return them to your vehicle. Spectators are also encouraged to leave valuables at home. Norfolk Public Schools is not responsible for any items left in vehicles during athletic events.
