Mr. David Baez
Mr. Baez graduated from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Science degree. He majored in biology and minored in French. After pursuing a career in restaurant management, he decided his true love was teaching. Mr. Baez completed the Career Switcher program at Old Dominion University and began teaching science at Ruffner Academy in 2010. He has taught biology, life science, earth science and physical science. He loves working with the students at Ruffner and especially challenging the Young Scholars to think critically. As Ruffner’s house DJ, Mr. Baez also entertains our students at Ruffner Academy dances.

Mrs. Beverly Butler
Mrs. Butler has worked with Norfolk Public Schools for sixteen years. She earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees from Old Dominion University and The College of William and Mary. She began her career with NPS teaching fifth grade at Lindenwood Elementary as the math and science lead teacher. Mrs. Butler has her Gifted Certification and has taught all core subjects. She came to Ruffner Academy in 2006 to work with the Young Scholars Program and currently teaches sixth, seventh and eighth grade students U.S. History, Civics and Economics and World Geography.

Mrs. Helen Pryor
Mrs. Helen Pryor serves as the (ELA) English Language Arts and an (ALM) Autonomous Learner Model teacher for grades 6, 7 and 8 for the Young Scholars Program at Ruffner Academy. Mrs. Pryor is a graduate of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey with a B.A. in Journalism and Mass Media with minors in English and Communications. In addition to her gifted endorsement, she has a Masters degree in School Leadership and Administration from Cambridge College. She sponsors several enrichment clubs such as Socrates Café, Forensics, Future Problem Solvers, Shakespeare Around the Globe and Back, VA Shipbuilding and Repair LEGO Club, Nauticus Jr. Scientists, and WordMasters; as well as various public speaking contests, read-a-thons, vocabulary challenges, and the annual spelling bee. Mrs. Pryor has received the Teacher of the Year Award from the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater and a Commendation of Distinction in education from the Norfolk NAACP.
