Virginia SUN Bucks helps eligible families with the cost of groceries during summer break when most schools are not in session. In 2026, each school-age child that meets the program requirements receives a one-time payment of $120. Benefits will be issued either on a family's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card or a pre-loaded Virginia SUN Bucks card that looks like a debit card.  It is very important that your child's school and local department of social services have your correct address.

The Virginia SUN Bucks benefit can be used to purchase groceries like fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains, dairy and meat at grocery stores, farmers markets and other places that accept SNAP EBT benefits.

Many (but not all) NPS families automatically qualify for Virginia SUN Bucks and will not need to apply to receive this benefit. If your family receives SNAP or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), your child automatically qualifies.  Students who are classified in the student information system as homeless or as a foster child are also automatically eligible.  Most children who receive income-based Medical Assistance are also automatically eligible for SUN Bucks because their income is under the eligible income level.

Those who do not automatically qualify may qualify, using an income-based application.  Please visit Virginia SUN Bucks - Virginia Department of Social Services for more information.  To apply for benefits, click on "Apply" and follow the instructions.  Mail your completed application to the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS). VDSS will begin reviewing applications in spring 2026 and issuing benefits in summer 2026 to qualifying children for Virginia SUN Bucks.

Please note- School Nutrition does not have the authority to issue SUN Bucks cards, process or review SUN Bucks applications, or verify/make changes to student records in the student information system.

School Nutrition invites all children ages 18 and under to take advantage of SUN Meals, offered in a variety of locations during the summer academic break through the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP)!
