The Operations Division plays a critical role in supporting the daily functioning, safety, learning environment, and overall experience of students and staff across the district. Encompassing a wide range of essential services, the division ensures that schools remain clean, efficient, well-maintained, well-fed, and well-connected so that teaching and learning can thrive.

The Athletics department supports sports programs across five high schools which offer twenty-five varsity sports. Five middle schools and six hybrid schools that serve middle school students that offer eighteen sports. The department supports twelve athletic directors and eleven athletic trainers. This team coordinates schedules, facilities, transportation, equipment, and compliance with athletic guidelines, ensuring student-athletes have safe, structured, and rewarding extracurricular opportunities.
Capital Improvement Projects
The Capital Projects team manages large-scale infrastructure initiatives such as replacing roofs, windows, doors, and HVAC systems. Over the last five years, the district has completed more than $130 million in capital improvements, enhancing the safety, efficiency, and long-term sustainability of school facilities.

Educational Planning Services
Educational Planning Services is responsible for long-range facility planning and districtwide enrollment analysis. This team leads efforts related to facility replacements, school closures, capital project planning, and redistricting for elementary, middle, and high schools. Facilities Services
Facilities process 10,000 work orders each year, supporting forty-eight schools and three additional district work sites. Skilled trades staff—including carpenters, electricians, painters, locksmiths, and HVAC technicians—provide timely repairs, preventive maintenance, and facility upgrades that keep buildings safe, functional, and conducive to learning.

Nutrition Services
School Nutrition operates a full-scale warehouse, central kitchen, and distribution center alongside forty-eight school cafeterias, providing more than six million no cost meals and snacks to students annually. High-quality food is delivered to schools each day to ensure students receive freshly prepared, nutritious meals. Menus are planned by a registered dietician and meet or exceed all required federal and state nutrition standards. Resources currently include a mobile kitchen, a food pantry, and multiple food-producing indoor hydroponic gardens. The department operates year-round and serves as one of Virginia’s largest sponsors of the USDA Summer Food Service Program.
Print Shop Services
Print Shop Services support instructional and administrative needs across all fifty-one locations, producing more than twelve million copies annually. The print shop provides essential materials including educational resources, testing review packets, letterhead, business cards, and other districtwide communications.
Transportation Services
Transportation oversees a fleet of 230 school buses that travel more than 1 million miles per year, safely transporting students to and from school, extracurricular activities, athletic events, and field trips.
The department also manages the district’s white fleet, which includes vehicles used to deliver food from the central kitchen, transport tradesmen to facilities work sites, and support the mobility of district security officers. Together, these transportation operations ensure that people and essential resources arrive where they are needed, reliably and efficiently. There is also a 12 bay garage that provides inspections and all repairs for the yellow and white fleets.
