The Department of Human Resources will assess your eligibility for leave under the FMLA once you submit the Universal Medical Leave & Accommodation Intake Form. All leave is unpaid unless you have accrued leave available to cover the absence(s). However, you may use your accrued sick, personal, or vacation leave to cover the absence(s) and receive your usual contract pay. Once you have exhausted your accrued leave, you will not be paid.

If you are a VRS Plan 1 or Plan 2 employee and are enrolled in Norfolk Public Schools' sick leave bank, you can receive pay from the bank once you have exhausted your accrued leave and have been without pay for thirty (30) days. You may use the sick leave bank for up to forty-five (45) days of approved leave.

If you are a VRS Hybrid employee, you can only access the NPS sick leave bank if you elected enrollment and are in your first year of employment. After your first year of employment, you become eligible for short-term disability benefits through the Virginia Retirement System, if approved.
