Cultural Competency Canvas Course

In accordance with Virginia Code §22.1-298.7.and Norfolk Public Schools' Policy GCL - Professional Staff Development , "Every employee holding a license issued by the Board of Education is required to complete cultural competency training, in accordance with guidance issued by the Board of Education, at least every two years" (2023).

The purpose of this course is to ensure each licensed employee meets the state and division expectations. The course will provide you with information on each Cultural Competency Domain. In addition, resources are provided to support these domains within your respective context.

To receive full credit for completing this course, participants will work through each domain and complete the Canvas Quiz provided at the conclusion. Once you have completed each section and the quiz, your Frontline for Professional Growth profile will reflect 2.0 professional development points for completing the “Canvas Cultural Competency Course.

Rethink Ed Behavior Training Series

Learning Support – Special Education Services offered the Rethink Ed Behavior Training Series Cohort to 15 selected participants. During this cohort, participants will receive targeted professional development and coaching on the following topics:

• Evidence-based practices to shape and manage behavior (i.e. de-escalation strategies)
• Setting up a safe environment/classroom management
• Decrease the need for Functional Behavior Assessments, Behavior Intervention Plans, and referrals to more restrictive placements.
• Effectively delivering positive reinforcements and behavior-specific feedback
• Monitoring student progress through data collection
• Address strategies to reduce discipline disproportionality
• And much more...
