Positive Sportsmanship

Norfolk Public Schools Athletics takes great pride in fostering a positive and respectful athletic environment where our student-athletes can grow, compete, and represent our schools with integrity. As we continue through the sports seasons, we want to take a moment to emphasize the importance of good sportsmanship and the role it plays in ensuring a fun and competitive experience for everyone involved.
Promoting Sportsmanship and Respect
We encourage all athletes to compete with passion, demonstrate teamwork, and show respect for coaches, teammates, opponents, and officials. Sportsmanship is a key part of any competition, teaching valuable life lessons about discipline, perseverance, and respect under pressure.
To maintain a positive environment, it is important to recognize that certain behaviors, such as fighting, inappropriate language, and aggressive physical contact, are not in line with the values of our athletic program. Engaging in unsportsmanlike conduct carries consequences to ensure fair play and the safety of all participants.
Unsportsmanlike Conduct and Consequences
Fighting is not tolerated and will result in a suspension from games.- Consequences for Fighting:
- Players involved in a fight will be suspended for a minimum of 30% of the total number of games for that sport.
- Players who leave the bench to engage in an altercation will be suspended for a minimum of 20% of the total number of games for that sport.
Additionally, behaviors such as inappropriate language, aggressive physical contact, or disrespect toward officials may lead to a player’s ejection from the game. Players involved in a fight may also face additional school disciplinary action, separate from their athletic suspension.
A Commitment to Excellence
We ask for your support in reinforcing these expectations with your student-athlete. Encourage them to compete with heart, enjoy the experience, and demonstrate respect even in challenging moments. When athletes display sportsmanship, they not only elevate their own game but also contribute to a culture of excellence that benefits the entire school community.
Thank you for your continued support in making our athletic program a positive experience for all.
NPS Athletics Partners with Positive Coaching Alliance

As we continue to make sportsmanship the top priority of our department, Norfolk Public Schools Athletics is proud to announce a partnership with Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) for the 2025-2026 school year! Positive Coaching Alliance is a non-profit organization whose mission is to transform the youth sports culture where all youth and high school athletes have a positive, character-building experience, resulting in better athletes, better people. As our athletic programs strive to develop our student-athletes and prepare them for our highly competitive world, PCA provides our administration, coaches, student-athletes and families with the tools necessary to cultivating a positive experience for all.
AOS Student Athlete of the Month
Throughout the school year, Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists recognizes one male and one female student as the Student-Athletes of the Month. These students are nominated by their school’s Athletic Director in recognition of their outstanding achievements both on and off the field. Congratulations to our honorees!
