Lake Taylor alum donates culturally inclusive books to Tidewater Park Elementary

Excited Tidewater Park students perused a table filled with books on African-American figures Sojourner Truth, Marcus Garvey and fictional characters such as Nikki and Deja, Jaden Toussiant and Keena Ford, in hopes of selecting the perfect book to dive into and explore. Thanks to NPS alum, Starr Armstrong, President & C.E.O. of Clever Communities In Action (CCIA), whose organization specifically donates books highlighting people of color to be included in public school libraries throughout Hampton Roads and is now taking her mission on the road to the children of Flint, MI.

The Eternal Roots Band provided entertainment with African drums, as anxious readers selected books, and for dramatic effect while Armstrong led a group read aloud. School Board Chair, Rodney Jordan, Delegate Daun Hester, and CCIA Board Members enjoyed interacting with students and echoed the joy of reading with them. The students presented Armstrong with a signed poster to show their appreciation for her generosity.

"We are delighted each year to see the children's faces light up as they are presented with the vast selection of literature", said Starr Armstrong. This effort has been a passion of hers since 2011.  To-date the young CEO and product of NPS has donated over 1,000 new books to 12 Title I schools in the region.
