Students at W. H. Taylor Elementary started their morning off with a bang, as part of the 9th Annual Read with MEac Celebration, Tuesday, March 7, 2017.  The elementary school, earned first-place honors in the citywide reading contest that ran from September 20, 2016 - February 6, 2017.  The contest was organized by the Mid-Atlantic Eastern Athletic Conference's (MEAC) Senior Woman Administrators (SWA); each school's reading progress was monitored by the Renaissance Star Reading program.  The students' hard work was rewarded with a celebratory pep rally and a check was presented to the school for $2000.

Historically Black College and University (HBCU) participants in the morning's activities included the cheerleading squads from Hampton and Norfolk State Universities as well as representatives, mascots and cheerleaders from Bethune-Cookman University, Delaware State University, Florida A & M University, Morgan State University, North Carolina Central University, Savannah State University and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Principal Feliton, school administrators, teachers, students and staff had a great time dancing, cheering and celebrating their very worthy accomplishment.  Remarks were given by Dr. Boone–Superintendent, Dr. Dennis Thomas–MEAC Commissioner, Mary Hill–Chair, MEAC Senior Administrator and Yvonne Allmond–Senior VP of Private Banking at TowneBank, who also participated in the check presentation.
