Groundbreaking Ceremony  for Camp Allen Elementary School

Groundbreaking Ceremony  for Camp Allen Elementary School

Camp Allen Elementary School hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, at 4:00 PM to commemorate the beginning of construction for the new, state-of-the-art campus.  This was the last groundbreaking as part of an unprecedented project to build five new schools in three years. Norfolk Mayor – Kenneth C. Alexander, School Board Chair – Rodney Jordan, Commander John Graff of Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads and NPS Superintendent – Dr. Melinda J. Boone, provided remarks and thanked those involved, from key legislators, city staff, military partners, architects, the builder, to school and community supporters.  Dr. Boone expressed how impactful these new schools have been to the students and how appreciative the district has been to all involved, especially Senators, Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, who helped to champion the effort and secure funding for the project.  In addition, she recognized the School Liaison Officers, who are so helpful with addressing the needs of the many military families that Camp Allen serves.  The superintendent also stressed, that it is the commitment to public education from all stakeholders involved, that helped to make this project a reality.

The excitement from the students, parents and other attendees was palpable. Ms. Keziah Speed, a 5th grader and military dependent at Camp Allen, was selected to represent the student body.  She gave an enlightening and humorous speech, outlining what many of the students are looking forward to with the new facility and what they won’t miss about the old one.  Guests were also treated to a surprise art exhibit where the students drew pictures of what they imagined, when they thought about the new school.  Special thanks to Principal Deena Johnson-Copeland, Karen Coltrain, art teacher, and all of the students, faculty and staff at Camp Allen for supporting this most memorable event.  Stay tuned for information about the ribbon cutting once the project is completed.
