
The 2008 high school summer school program is designed for students desirous of taking a course for the first time or for students retaking failed semester courses. Students who have been unsuccessful in a course or lack basic understanding of a particular subject should take/repeat course in the fall. Each semester requires seventy (70) hours of classroom instruction for a total of 140 clock hours for one (1) credit.

Second Semester: Monday, July 14, 2008 - Thursday, July 31, 2008
(Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

ELIGIBILITY: Students taking a course for the first time (must enroll for both semesters); students retaking failed semester course(s) may enroll for that semester.
CREDIT: Students may earn one-half (.50) credit in each semester course passed in summer school. END-OF-COURSE (SOL) TESTING WILL BE REQUIRED OF ALL STUDENTS ENROLLED IN English 11/2 (A3M); Algebra I (D36, D28,) Geometry (D50, D56); Algebra II (D66); Earth Science (EE4); Biology (EB5); Chemistry (EC4); World Studies (CCB, CCD); and VA/US History (CS2) unless test has been previously passed.

ATTENDANCE: Students will be dropped from the summer school roll with no tuition refund if he/she is absent or suspended for more than two (2) days during the summer program. Students enrolled in Driver Education Behind-the-Wheel (F56) and Classroom Driver Education Instruction (F55) must be in attendance every day of instruction - NO ABSENCES ARE PERMITTED. Students who know in advance they will be absent for more than two (2) days during the summer should NOT register for summer school.
REGISTRATION:
All Norfolk Public School students will register at their home school Monday - Friday, beginning Thursday, May 1, 2008 through Friday, June 13, 2008, from 7:45 a.m. - 12:00 noon. Special education students who desire to attend the high school summer school program will follow the same schedule and procedures as regular education students. Rising ninth graders who want to take a course for the first time can register at their zoned high school. Students MUST bring a letter of recommendation signed by the middle school principal and guidance counselor.
Private, parochial, and out-of-city students will register at Lake Taylor High School on Monday, June 16, 2008, from 8:30 a.m.-
11:30 a.m., PENDING AVAILABLE SEATS. Students are asked to bring a social security card as a form of identification and a report
card showing subject failed. NO PERSONAL CHECKS ACCEPTED on this day – tuition fees must be paid by cash, money order, or cashier’s check made payable to Norfolk Public Schools.
All students must have their credit sheets showing courses previously passed, identification, and tuition in order to register. NOTE: A fifty dollar ($50.00) late fee will be charged for registering after June 13, 2008. NO REFUND of tuition for courses incorrectly selected. NO REFUNDS after first week of each semester. FULL REFUND of tuition payment will be made for classes not offered due to lack of enrollment (minimum enrollment for a class is sixteen (16) students).
Dates for Driver Education Behind-the-Wheel are listed below. There will be two (2) classes each day for seven (7) days. Each class will be two (2) hours (7:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.).
Session I: June 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 30 & July 1
Session II: July 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11
Session III: July 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 21, & 22
Students can register for Driver Education Behind-the-Wheel on Friday, June 13, 2008, from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., Lake Taylor High School. Students must bring their credit sheets or certificates of completion (green cards) as proof of passing Classroom Driver Education. They must also have their learners’ permit prior to the beginning of class - NO EXCEPTIONS. Driver Education Behind-the-Wheel students must attend every day of instruction - NO ABSENCES ARE PERMITTED.
