Special Programs
Middle School Specialities:
- Azalea Gardens Middle School: The Effective Communication: Finding Our Voices As Writers program provides students with opportunities to enhance their writing skills in all subject areas by publishing and presenting their work through various formats such as schoolwide newspapers, children's magazines and by hosting an annual Author's Festival.
- Blair Middle School: The Robotics Program allows students to utilize everything from hydraulics and pneumatics systems to electronic devices and LEGOS to create a wide arrary of robots and enhance critical-thinking technology skills.
- Lafayette-Winona Middle School: The Technology Academy teaches students how to design rockets and bridges, create slide show and demonstration tapes, and utilize modeling and computer-aided design systems through various career and technical education programs.
- Lake Taylor Middle School: CAREER.COM allows students to explore their interests and abilites while being exposed to the connection between educational choices and careers.
- Northside Middle School: The Center of Environmental Studies and Science gives students hands-on restoration and conservation experiences, while becoming familar with the value and importance of the Chesapeake Bay.
- Norview Middle School: The Foreign Language Specialty Program provides students the opportunity to become proficient while participating in exploratory and credit-bearing courses in French, Spanish, Latin and German.
- Rosemont Middle School: The Celebrating learning Through Visual Arts and Music Program provides opportunities for students to apply their learning and skills through the technological elements of design, photography and graphic arts.
- Ruffner Academy: The Young Scholars Program identifies gifted students and provides opportunities to develop emotional and social skills along with attitudes necessary for life-long learning (with an emphasis on self-directed learning and self-evaluation).
- The School of International Studies at Meadowbrook: Utilizes a thematic approach that focuses on world languages, world cultures, and military science.
High School Specialities:
- Booker T. Washington High School: The Academy of the Arts program is designed to provide students with in-depth exposure to the arts through a rigorous, challenging curriculum that meets the academic and artistic needs of high school students.
- Granby High School: The International baccalaureate Diploma Program is a two-year, academically rigous curriculum intended for college-bound juniors and seniors who desire in-depth scholastic preparation.
- Lake Taylor High School: The Academy of Leadership and Military Science is a collaborative venture between NPS and a number of community, private sector, government, higher education, and military agencies. The small learning community of the Academy is comprised of cluster scheduling of all core and foreign language classes as well as year-round internships with community partners.
- Maury High School: The Medical and Health Studies Program is a unique program offering opportunities to highly motivated high school students seriously considering a career in the dramatically expanding fields of medicine and health care.
- Norview High School: The Leadership Center for the Sciences and Engineering program is a school within the regular comprehensive high school. Students attend leadership training and academic classes as an exclusive group while joining a school-spirited student body in their elective courses, athletics, and many extracurricular activities.
- NPS and Tidewater Community College Middle College High School program: The MCHS is committed to providing college-level education for selected Norfolk high school juniors. The program is dedicated to serving juniors who are capable of meeting the entrance requirements but who are not always engaged in a traditional high school. Students will take core academic courses taught by certified public school teachers and college courses taught by college faculty.
- Governor's School for the Arts: The Governor's School for the Arts provides pre-professional, individualized and focused instructional programs in dance, instrumental and vocal music, performing arts, theatre, and visual arts for students with a high degree of innate artistic talent and potential for growth. Students are committed to developing their talent and are considering/planning careers in the arts.
