Attendance

Every student is expected to attend school every day, on time, unless he or she is sick or there is some other extenuating circumstance. A written excuse from the parent or guardian must be presented when a child is tardy or absent from school. The excuse should state the date, time, and reason for the tardiness or absence. To be considered in attendance, an elementary student must be in school a minimum of three hours during the regular school day; in secondary school, a student must attend 75 % of a class to be considered present in that class for the day. Early release is discouraged except for medical reasons. Unexcused early release may affect a student's academic performance.

After TWO days of absence, the principal or designee shall make every effort to notify the parent/guardian of the student's absence. After a total of FIVE days of absence, written notification of absences will be mailed to the parent/guardian. When these absences reach a total of 15 consecutive days, the student will be dropped from the school roll. Students who are absent a total of 20 or more days WILL NOT BE PROMOTED and students taking credit-bearing courses who miss 10 or more days per semester or students assigned to a block schedule who are absent 7 or more days (excused or unexcused) in a semester course, or 14 or more days (excused or unexcused) in a school year, will not be promoted or granted course credit regardless of their grades. Principals, however, will have the authority to review individual cases and may grant credit promotion. Parents must call and schedule an appointment to have such cases reviewed by the principal or designee. NPS needs the assistance of parents and guardians to make sure students know that you expect them to attend school every day.
