Administration of Medication

Students who become ill or injured at school should report to the clinic or the office. Please do not send seriously ill students to school. If illness or injury is of a nature that the student should go home, the parent will be notified. If the parent cannot be contacted, the school will notify the emergency contact provided by the parent. Because of the dangers of misuse of drugs, the administration of medication during school hours is discouraged. If this is not possible, the following procedure must be followed:

  1. A physician or licensed nurse practitioner must provide written orders. Both the physician and parent must sign the order.
  2. Medication must be brought to school by the parent or legal guardian, or the parent must call the school to confirm that it is being delivered by the pupil with the form and must be in a container which is properly labeled by the pharmacy or physician.
  3. THE SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICES ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION FORM and the Southeastern Virginia Asthma Healthcare Action Plan and Authorization for Medication form must be updated with any change of medication.

Head lice (Pediculosis):

There are 8-10 million cases of head lice in our country per year. In order to minimize the spread of head lice, students with head lice or louse eggs are immediately excluded from school. Students may be readmitted after verification from the school nurse or nurse assistant that treatment has been successful and the student's hair is nit free. A third incidence of head lice necessitates a home visit by a health department official. Students with recurring head lice are checked periodically to ensure that they remain nit free.
