Financial AidFinancial aid is money in the form of grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study programs. The purpose of financial aid is to help students and their families pay for college. The money received through scholarships and grants do not have to be paid back; they are considered "gift aid". However, financial aid in the form of loans must be paid back after you graduate. Loans and work-studies, programs that help you earn money for college through part time jobs, are considered "self help" aid.

ScholarshipsThere are countless scholarships available to you and your family to help pay for college. Scholarships are excellent because they are easy to apply for and represent free money that you do not have to pay back.
Scholarships recognize achievements or distinguished talents with awards ranging from $500.00 to full tuition. The types of scholarships available also vary, from scholarships such as The McDonald's Black History Makers of Tomorrow Essay to the Virginia PTSA scholarship for students planning on entering the teaching profession.
Applying for scholarships is easy. Simply secure an application, fill it out, and then drop it in the mail box. The following pages will help you find all that free money and even give you a list of local and national scholarships available through your guidance counselor.
