Minutes of the Monthly School Board Meeting
August 17-18, 2007

School Board Retreat

The School Board of the City of Norfolk convened the retreat at 8:37 a.m. in the Bank of the Commonwealth Community, Ocean View Office, located at 1901 East Ocean View Avenue in Norfolk, Virginia.

Present were: Mr. Bishop (Chair), Mr. Cook, Mr. Driggers, Dr. McCluney, Dr. Tonelson, and Dr. Wright.  Mrs. Rhodes was absent.  Superintendent Jones, and Panasonic consultants Andrew Gelber and George Perry were present as well as Clerk Rhodes and Deputy Clerk Stocks.  

The Board discussed:

  1. House Resolution 648 regarding No Child Left Behind.
  2. Board Leadership for the next phase of the journey to World Class
  3. A review and reaffirmation of Board Values and Norms.
  4. Brief update on Norfolk Public Schools’ Strategic Plans
  5. A review of School Board assessment results
  6. Specific ways to develop, improve, fine-tune, or revise our practices
  7. Communication/Engagement with City Council and City Manager
  8. Community Engagement/Public Relations/Marketing
  9. Communicating with each other
  10. Board Accountability Plan

The Board recessed at 4 p.m. and agreed to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.

The retreat was called to order at 8:30 a.m.  Present were Mr. Bishop (Chair), Mr. Driggers, Dr. McCluney, Dr. Tonelson, and Dr. Wright.  Mrs. Rhodes and Mr. Cook were absent.   Panasonic consultants Andrew Gelber and George Perry were present as well as Clerk Rhodes and Deputy Clerk Stocks.  

The Board discussed:

  1. Stewarding the Vision:  A World-Class School District for All Students:  All Means ALL
    • As stewards of the vision, what are some of the challenges we are likely to face during the 2007-2008 school year?
    • How can we prepare ourselves, collectively and individually, to respond appropriately and effectively to these challenges?

  2. Next Steps and Closure

The retreat adjourned at 11:15 a.m.
