Recognition Ceremony
PRESENT: Chair Bishop, Vice Chair Rhodes, Mr. Driggers, Dr. McCluney Dr. Jones, and Clerk Rhodes.
The School Board convened the recognition ceremony at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Norview Middle School, located at 6325 Sewells Point Road. Mr. Bishop welcomed those assembled and turned the meeting over to Clerk Rhodes for reading of the commendations.

- NPS Volleyball Tournament Teams --Chesterfield and Bellmore
- Florencia Miller, the Norfolk Interagency Council of Service to Youth (NICOSTY) Scholarship Chairperson, presented Amy Allen, a Lake Taylor HS senior; Catherine Ambler, a Maury HS senior; and Rodnita Perkins, a Norview HS senior with their certifications. These young women were selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship from the (NICOSTY). The scholarship recognizes their commitment to community service work over the past four years. In addition to rigorous academic goals and scholastic achievement, they made time to volunteer in areas reflecting their individual passions.
- Yang (Robin) Robin Tang, a 12th grader and valedictorian for Maury High School, scored 2360 on the SAT and is a PSAT commended scholar. Robin received the highest score in the City of Norfolk.
- The Priority Auto Community Scholarship was established in 2004 as a way for Priority Auto Group to give back to the community. Priority Auto awards one $500 scholarship for each of the Norfolk’s high schools. Dennis Ellmer from the Priority Auto Group recognized the following students:
- Booker T. Washington High School—Beveyelle Williams
- Granby High School—John Ehlers
- Maury High School—Tamara Davis
- Norview High School—Catherine Flusche
- Lake Taylor High School—Darrelle Anderson
- Darrelle Anderson was the grand prize winner for an additional $3,750 scholarship from Priority.
- Special recognition was extended to the following Blair Middle School students: Kiahna Conner won first place in the local competition for Division I, first place in the District competition, and third place on the state level. Emily Pope won first place in the Division 2 local competition. Jordan Vaughan took first place at the division level and 3rd place at the state level Essay Contest in 2005-06--Elks Americanism Essay contest.
- The following students received awards from the Eli Weisel Holocaust Remembrance Contest sponsored by NPS Gifted Services. Kyle Losee won first place in the visual arts competition and Francis Gonzalez won third place in the writing competition in the junior division. Both students are eighth graders at Northside Middle School. Please come forward.
- Over 800 students from across the nation competed in over 25 robotic events at the National Robotics Competition in Marion, Ohio. Dr. George Skena and 21 students from the NORSTAR Robotics program won 10 awards--the highest number by any secondary school in attendance. This is definitely an example of world class because students had to problem solve and work as a team to accomplish a positive outcome. This national competition is sponsored by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

- The World-Class 2010 Customer Service Awards were established to showcase the top elementary, middle, and high schools on a monthly basis for quality services. The program is sponsored by School Plant facilities and GCA Services Group. Quality assurance inspections are done monthly by the area managers and the inspection scores are tabulated for each school for a final score. The top scoring schools are chosen as the finalists.
The winners for March 2007 were:

- The following students have been awarded the Norfolk Council of PTA/PTSAs J. Frank Sellew Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $2,500:

And, Brittany Adams of Maury HS won the Gene Carter Award for a scholarship of $3,000 for having the highest score.
- Bay View Elementary School is proud to announce that four of Maryanne Quinn's fifth-grade students won first place in the Virginia Future Problem Solvers Competition in Richmond in April. Bailey Brubaker, Carolyn Butler, Danielle Rodgers and Essence Thomas will go on to compete in the International Future Problem Solvers event in Fort Collins, Colorado on May 30 - June 3. The winning entry consisted of a six-part booklet prepared in two hours time that identified and solved a problem related to the topic of “Caring for the Elderly.” The students have been developing problem-solving skills all year under the direction of Jessica Grell, their coach and gifted resource teacher.
In addition to the team winners, Naire Poole, a sixth grader from Ruffner Middle School, won second place in the Individual Problem Solving competition.
- The School Board has annually honored academically-talented middle school students who score 1000 or higher on the SAT. This recognition is one of the many highlights of our division’s National Merit Ladder program. The following students are to be recognized for their outstanding performance on the SAT exams:

- In February, the Norfolk Public Library sponsored the African American History Month Youth Art Contest. Students illustrated a scene from their favorite African American book or poem to win. Tarrallton Elementary School’s Casey Puryear, a second grader, and Kelsey Puryear, a fourth grader, won first place in the literature categories. These students were recognized at the Kirn Memorial Library.
- The following Ghent Elementary School students received honors as NPS Reflections contest winners
- Brooke Adams won first place for Music on the Intermediate level and received the Award of Excellence at the district level.
- Sandra Lasakow received second place in the area of Literature on the Intermediate level
- Dakota Morton won third place for Middle School Literature and first place for Photography
- Melanie Books won third place for Visual Arts for the Middle School category
- Emma Yockey won second place for Photography at the Primary level.
- Harley Robertson won second place for Photography at the Intermediate Level.
- Ghent School’s Orchestra, under the direction of Dian Kawczynski, received excellent ratings at the Regional Orchestra Festival in March. Students in the orchestra were Emmanual Banks, Brandon Carter, Dakota Morton, Eric Norwood, Caitlin Perry, John Thatch, Sequoya Boyd, Mari Green, Mary Morton, Nathan Palevich, Zach Perry, and Guy Willis.
- DeShawn Gaddy, an eighth grader at Lafayette Winona Middle School student, won first place on the Middle School Level in the Drawing and Painting competition for the Hermitage Foundation Awards.
- James Wright, an eighth grader at Lafayette Winona Middle School and advanced Orchestra member, composed a piece of music for the string instruments and won first place on the school, district, and regional levels for the Reflections Competition.
This outstanding student has made it to Jr. Regional Orchestra, first chair in the All-City Orchestra, third chair in the String Orchestra of Bay Youth, and first chair in the Jr. Strolling Strings. James, please come forward.
- Christopher Beach, an eighth grader at Northside Middle School, won second place in the Career Exploration event at the annual FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) Virginia Leadership Conference. The competitive events are designed as business simulations where students compete in a variety of business and leadership categories.
- Northside Middle School is proud of Tiffany Gardner, an eighth grader, for winning the third place District Award in the area of speech sponsored by the Optimist Club of Norfolk.
- Laura Hulings, lead department chair at Northside Middle School, was selected to share her presentation, Implementing an Effective Teacher Mentorship Program Within Your School, at the State Conference for the Virginia Middle School Association. This presentation was developed to showcase how to utilize a mentorship approach to ensure that new teachers are effectively embraced in the profession of teaching.
- Duncan Hubbell, Northside Middle School’s special education department chair, was selected to share his presentation, Panel Discussion on 504 Eligibility, at the National Conference for the National Middle School Association in Houston, Texas. The purpose of this presentation is to provide school counselors and counseling candidates with critical information pertaining to 504 eligibility, plan development, and enforcement as stated by federal law.
- Alyssa Harrison won first place in the Keyboarding Applications I event at the annual FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) Virginia Leadership Conference. Alyssa is a sixth grader at Northside Middle School.
- Jodie Mirador has qualified for the President's Volunteer Service Award! This award recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, through a partnership with the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. Jodie is a sixth grader at Ruffner Middle School. Jodie, please come forward.
- The annual PTA Reflections program is one of the best hands-on activities of the National PTA. The following students won awards in several categories.

- Azalea Festival Scholarships--The Azalea Festival designated ten student diplomats from five NPS high schools to vie for its annual scholarship through NATO. The students were required to engage in independent study to understand the nation that he or she was assigned to represent and given the opportunity to network with the Azalea Court members, the Liaison representatives from the Allied Command Transformation (ACT) in Norfolk, members of the International community, and ultimately responsible for facilitating a day of cultural exchange in their own high school. Three NPS students won $1,000 scholarships from the Annual Azalea Festival committee. They were Courtney Whitaker, Maury High School, Brittany Knaggs, Booker T. Washington High School, and Tracy Huffman, Granby High School

The Azalea Gardens Middle School Step Team took second Place in the 2007 "Step to Impress" Competition.

AGMS FBLA
Azalea Gardens’ Lindsey Thomas, won first place in the Virginia State FBLA Keyboarding Applications II competition. Come forward, Lindsey.
- Cherrelle Allen-- a Norview High School senior in Catering II at Norfolk Technical Center, participated in the 15th Annual Career for Culinary Arts Program’s (C-CAP) Cooking for Scholarships Competition in March at the Culinary Institute of Virginia. Cherrelle won a four-year $46,700 scholarship to Monroe College in New York. She is also the recipient of a $1,500 scholarship from International Food Service Executives Association (IFSEA).
- Jordan Patricio of Larrymore Elementary School, participated in The Elks National Foundation’s regional basketball competition in Middletown, Maryland. Jordan shot 24 out of 25 baskets to win the competition. Jordan competed against students from Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C., West Virginia, and North Carolina.
- Dreamkeeper’s Academy at J. J. Roberts and Oakwood elementary schools were named Title I Distinguished Schools by the Virginia Department of Education. The schools met the federal benchmarks in reading and mathematics, maintained full accreditation for two consecutive years, and having mean test scores for both English and mathematics at the 60th percentile or higher.
Dreamkeeper’s just received the National School Change Award and is one of only six schools in the country to receive this recognition. Principal of Dreamkeepers Academy Dr. Doreatha White and Principal Sheila T. Holas of Oakwood Elementary School accepted the awards for their schools.

Rosemont Middle School’s Virginia Ketterman and Janard Rockett, were given the Wards Corner Youth Optimist's Club Award. The Wards Corner Optimists Club recognized these eighth grade students for their outstanding leadership in the community.
- Michael Porter, a first grader at Bay View Elementary School, won the Virginia Council on Economic Education’s "Color the Concepts" Calendar Contest for the 2007-2008 calendar. Michael's entry was selected for its creativity and artistic ability to describe an important economic concept. Michael won a $50 savings bond.
- Ruffner Middle School’s Forensics Team, under the leadership of Jennifer Francis, won the district middle school competition by defeating six other middle schools.

- Arlene Frango, Executive Secretary in School Governance, was named Virginia Educational Office Professional of the Year. Arlene was Norfolk’s 2006 Office Professional of the Year.
- NPS District Volleyball Tournament Winners
Congratulations to the Chesterfield Academy volleyball team for winning first place in the district tournament over the School Plant-Bellmore team. Team members are Rosalee Agcaoili, Kelvin Bailey, Kathryn Caple, Charlene Fenner, Maria White, Carrie Miskowiec, Donald Shavely, Kenneth Vaughan, Kathy Verhappen, and April Sanders.
We would like to recognize the School Plant-Bellmore team consisting of Kavonzo "Zo" Beaman, Kimberly Case, Randall "RC" Collins, Dee-on Donald, Charlie "Melvin" Ricks, Michelle Sessoms, Lamont Smallwood, Deborah Williams, and Kathy Lewis.
