Minutes of the School Board Special Meeting
February 12, 2007
Recognition Ceremony
PRESENT: Chair Bishop, Vice Chair Rhodes, Mr. Cook, Dr. McCluney, Dr. Tonelson, Dr. Wright, Dr. Jones, and Clerk Rhodes.
The School Board convened the recognition ceremony at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Ruffner Middle School, located at 610 May Avenue. Mr. Bishop welcomed those assembled and turned the meeting over to Clerk Rhodes for reading OF the commendations.

- School Counselors, Joyce Beamon, Senior Coordinator, Resolution declaring Virginia School Counseling Week, Feb. 5-9, 2007
- Karen Rogers was selected by the National Science Teachers Association to present, Teaching Science Through Literature, at the national conference.
- Andrea Tottossy was selected by the Virginia State Reading Association to participate on a panel of “distinguished Virginia educators” to discuss the topic, “How to Turn Your School Around: The Role of Literacy.” The State Superintendent will moderate the panel.
- Rena’ Toomey has been asked to work with aspiring educators at Oxford Brooks University, Oxford, England, regarding music education.
- D’Andrea Chapman, National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) as of January 2007 notification.
- Micaiah Cheeks, Rosemont Middle-7th grader, accepted into the People to People Leadership Forum, a program to fulfill the vision of Dwight D. Eisenhower had for fostering world citizenship when he founded People to People during his presidency in 1956.
- Cohort One Gifted Endorsement Group completed 4 graduate level courses in the area of Gifted Education through the College of William and Mary. Instructor Dr. Elissa Brown of the College of William and Mary is present this evening.

- Dreamkeepers Academy principal Dr. Doreatha White and students in Patricia Costis’ English Avant Garde class received a Star Award from the Urban League of Hampton Roads Young Professionals for their commitment to diversity. Recently, the students gave an astonishing performance of Dr. Martin Luther King’s, “I Have a Dream” speech at the Urban League’s Martin Luther King breakfast. Students were Corey Whitaker, Cameron Watford, William Allen, and Brenyan Gallop.

- Instructional Technology Resource Teachers, Completion of PBS TeacherLine/ISTE NETS-T Certification Capstone Program. The instructor for the Instructional Technology Specialists was Sharon Hurwitz.

- Debra Kamrath earned the School Foodservice & Nutrition Specialist (SPNS) credential from the School Nutrition Association (SNA)
- Dr. Barbara Laws was selected by the Virginia Art Education Association (VAEA) to facilitate a leadership training retreat for the VAEA Board of Directors that provided the association’s new strategic plan.
- Regina Davis, Facilitating the NPS Mentoring Program, which earned the 2007 Award for the Most Outstanding Mentoring Program in the State from the Virginia Mentoring Association
- The Norfolk Technical Center, Mr. William Davis, Principal, received from the Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital Foundation a check for $25,000 to be applied to the health care training programs at NTC.
- John “Sam” Padgett, Larchmont, 5th grade, accepted to the National Center for Early Academic Excellence for its National Young Scholars Program
- Sarah Peoples-Perry, principal of Campostella, YWCA recognition and award for her outstanding contribution to the YMCA Community Service Program
- Poplar Halls Elementary School students Jackson Payne, 1st place who placed 1st in the citywide science fair, in the Physical Science category with an investigation on how different colored light bulbs affect the evaporation of water and Absana Gibson, Demeatrey James, Bradley Haljendi, and Romelo McKiver 2nd place, For winning second place in the citywide science fair in the Environmental Science category by testing how pollutants on school grounds impacted plant growth.
