The Norfolk Public School System is participating in the Norfolk Relay For Life on May 30-31, 2008. In 2007 Norfolk Public Schools raised over $182,000 in the fight against cancer! In 2008 the goal is to raise $200,000 in the fight against cancer and to have 100% active school team participation and increased event attendance by teams. Dr. Jones has a goal of 100% participation by ALL Norfolk Schools in 2008.
The purpose of the Relay For Life School Program is to raise awareness and educate about cancer, team build for faculty and students, and raise funds for the fight against cancer. Relay For Life teaches good citizenship to youth of all ages, develops student leadership skills, enhances creativity, and encourages volunteerism and community involvement. Plus, Relay For Life is fun for everyone!
Each school is requested to identify at least one Team Captain, ideally someone with a strong interest in fighting cancer. This Team Captain will recruit a group of school employees, students & parents, and friends/family to be team members. The Team Captain or designated representative should attend all monthly Relay For Life Team Meetings. The Team Captain will lead their school in fundraising activities, participate in the School Program and share information learned at the monthly meetings with their team members.
We have updated the Relay For Life School Program based on your feedback last year. The program will be based on a “Levels” recognition system instead of a points system. Levels will be based on activities and money turned in by Friday, May 23, 2008 in order to be recognized during the event. The Awards Ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 31st in the morning (time TBA).). If a team reaches the “Purple Mermaid Level,” all registered team members will be welcome at our “Late Night Disco” for food, drink, and FUN! Details to come.
Luminaria and car raffle tickets sold count toward your team fundraising goal. Fundraising during spirit week is encouraged. See www.norfolkrelay.org and the suggestions below for additional fundraising ideas. Prior year fundraising activities including “Links to a Cure”, “Penny Wars”, Poster and Poem Contest, and the Chili Cookoff are not required, but are still great fundraisers and team builders!

These ideas can be used by Team Captains to fundraise and develop teamwork in the schools among staff, students, and parents.
Links to a Cure – many variations are possible
Cookin’ for a Cure – Chili Cookoff
Parents, students, and teachers will volunteer to cook their best chili recipe and compete against one another to win the school cook off. Parents, students and teachers can also get involved by purchasing a ticket to the event (ticket price is up to the schools discretion), which allows them to taste entries and vote for their favorite chili. Once the votes are counted, a school winner is named.
Penny Wars
Each grade is assigned a container and they are asked to make donations into their container using nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars -- anything but pennies. The other groups can then add “negative” amounts to other grades by adding pennies to their container. Pennies are negative and anything else is positive. For example a nickel = +5 points, a penny = -1 point, so that container would have four points.
Relay for Life Poster and Poem Contests
Children will have two opportunities to show their ‘creative side’ in raising awareness about cancer within the school. Children can create posters that talk about cancer (they can incorporate Relay colors/logo) or write poems that deal with the topic of cancer. The school should post the posters up throughout the school with a jar - and the kids can vote using their change.
They are going to do WHAT for Cancer Contest - Ask your "popular" person (principal or teacher) to do something fun if your school raises a certain amount of money by June 1st. Be creative; for example, shave a beard or a head, dress up for Ms. Relay, kiss a pig, dunking booth, or get a pie in the face. This would preferably be done at the actual Relay – or at an internal school event.
Duct Tape to the Wall! - Must have a popular teacher/coach willing to do this one during an assembly. The teacher stands on a table or chair against the wall. Strips of duct tape are sold to students. Each strip is placed over the teacher’s
arms and legs until he/she is actually stuck to the wall.
“Blot out Cancer” - Paint the word “Cancer” on one of the walls and then sell Relay suns for $1 each for the students to try and "Blot out Cancer" by covering up the word with all of the suns purchased.
“Help Lick Cancer” - Sell suckers to students for 50 cents. This involves purchasing suckers and selling them in classrooms or at lunch. This is a great fundraiser for clubs. Potential to raise $1,000 with sucker sales.
Candy Gram Sale - Students buy candy grams for 25 cents and send them to anyone at school. The staff can donate the candy. Attach the candy to a little note. Works well at a holiday like Valentine’s Day. Potential to raise $600.
Read-A-Thon - Around spring break, the school hands out envelopes and Youth Incentive Sheets to every child who wants to participate. The children ask for pledges per book they will read over a three-week period, and then collect and turn in the money to the library. The school accomplishes one of their goals while raising money for Relay For Life. Potential to raise $2,000.
Hot Dog the Teacher - The “winning” teacher lays down in a “bun” and has ketchup and mustard squirted on them by students. Can also be an incentive used if the school reaches its overall fundraising goal.
