Ginger Rothermel

TITLE: Health and Physical Education Teacher, Poplar Halls Elementary School

YEARS WITH NPS: I have worked for NPS for 19 years. I taught health, PE and driver education at Norview High School and coached tennis, swimming, and softball. In addition, I worked at Campostella Elementary School.

WHAT’S THE MOST REWARDING THING ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?

The most rewarding part of my job is feeling a sense of worthwhile by making a difference in children’s lives. I have the luxury of teaching across the curriculum by adding academic lessons to the physical education curriculum which makes learning fun! Therefore, I feel I play a large part in educating children toward "total wellness" (emotionally, intellectually, and physically).

IF YOU COULD TELL THE WHOLE COMMUNITY ONE THING ABOUT NPS, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I am proud to work for NPS because I feel we work toward academic rigor in educating the whole child. My colleagues impress me because they work very hard to educate children and their families, in order to move them toward being productive members of society.

WHAT’S SOMETHING YOUR COWORKERS DO NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU?

My colleagues probably don’t know while I was in high school: My basketball jersey was retired; I was president of my senior class, editor of the yearbook, and vice president of the National Honor Society. Hence, I went to college at East Carolina University on a full scholarship for academics and athletics.

WHAT WAS A RECENT BOOK YOU READ OR MOVIE YOU SAW, AND WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT TO OTHERS?

The last movie I watched which left an impression on me was "the Blind Side." I would definitely recommend it because of the lessons in diversity; giving those who are different a chance, and the rewards/outcomes for all of those involved.

TITLE: Science Teacher and Science Department Chair at Norview Middle School

YEARS WITH NPS: 5

WHAT’S THE MOST REWARDING THING ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?

The most rewarding thing about teaching is that there is not ONE rewarding thing. Every day is a new experience for me. I witness my students grow academically and emotionally each and every day. Unlike other professions, teachers get to see the long-term effects of their intellectual nourishment. One of the most rewarding things is when I get emails and text messages from past students telling me about their most recent accomplishments. The fact that they want to include me in their big news, even after they have moved on, shows me that they can associate me with their achievement. Those moments make me feel like I’m more than their teacher, and more like family.

IF YOU COULD TELL THE WHOLE COMMUNITY ONE THING ABOUT NPS, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

NPS is filled with professionals who support, encourage, and motivate one another.

NPS is a community of leaders who are willing to do what is necessary to prepare our students for excellence.

WHAT’S SOMETHING YOUR COWORKERS DO NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I am almost finished working on my first women’s fiction novel.

WHAT WAS A RECENT BOOK YOU READ OR MOVIE YOU SAW, AND WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT TO OTHERS?

The last movie I saw was, Black Swan. I would absolutely recommend it to others.

WHAT’S THE MOST REWARDING THING ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?

The feedback from students is the most rewarding. Seeing their enthusiasm and excitement about science is a gift.

NPS has fantastic schools and teachers. Great things are happening in these buildings.

Some people do not know that as a Peace Corps volunteer, I lived for 2 years without electricity and indoor plumbing in Nepal.

I read “Noah’s Compass” by Anne Tyler, one of my favorite authors, and I do recommend it.
